PD PRESS: WHAT PD HAS BEEN READING JUNE 2023 EDITION

THE CASTLE OF OTRANTO

Otranto-01

Written by Walter Horace and published in 1764, this is what is regarded as the first gothoc horror story.Set in the 1100s, the book is claimed to be a translation of an Italian book which tells the tale of an evil Prince of Naples, who is made to pay for his treachery according to an ancient prophecy. The book can be described as a prose version of a Shakespearean play, with evil, double crossing and supernatural events. Of course there is a beautiful maiden who is to be forced into an evil marriage, and a dashing young lad to complicate things. PD thoroughly enjoyed this tale and highly recommends it.
